Honda CBR954 Motorcycle Parts & Information

Before Honda released the CBR1000 in 2004, there was the CBR954. And, the CBR954 was the 2002/2003 edition of the legendary CBR series, AKA the “Fireblade”. The original 1992, CBR900 model was designed by Tadeo Baba. ‘Fireblade’ is a name, mostly used outside the United States, to describe CBR models produced since 1992. The term ‘Fireblade’ was initially dubbed by those working on the CBR900, including its creator, ‘Baba San’ himself.

The original intention of Tadeo Baba was to incorporate a 750cc engine. However, the engine was boosted to 893cc, to raise the CBR into a whole new Honda class of it’s own. Indeed, when the CBR900 was unveiled, there was little doubt; a new standard had been set, for the entire production Sports Bike industry.

That big 893cc displacement engine, along with a lightweight, nimble, frame, were just a Sports Bike myth, until the CBR900. More power, less weight, being the goals, which have always defined, and redefined, the Sports Bike industry. Something which the CBR Fireblade series flipped into a new dimension. From 1992 to 1996, the design of the CBR Fireblade only underwent minor changes. In 1996, Honda completely redesigned the fork and shock components. The fuel tank was downsized, while the frame and swing arm were enlarged, and the walls made thinner. Compression was marginally improved, by increasing the bore size 1mm, and the engine by 1cc. Honda also added a throttle position sensor, curved radiator and a big, ‘bad boy’, muffler. The handlebars were also adjusted, improving ergonomics.

Again, few changes until 1998, when the engine components were revised, to reduce weight and friction. A smaller, more compact clutch replaced the old system, and gear-box ratios were changed to stay inline. In 2000, for the millennium model, the CBR underwent major revisions. The new CBR929 had a fuel injected 929cc engine, with larger valves and more over-square cylinder dimensions. It also weighed nine kilos less than its predecessor. A strong, yet lightweight, titanium exhaust system, with a HTEV (Honda Titanium Exhaust Valve) was another new feature. The HTEV ensuring top rate, low to mid range, performance, by automatically adjusting the exhaust diameter, relative to the engine rpm’s. Long anticipated inverted forks and a seventeen inch wheel on the front, were also thrown into the mix.

For the 2002 edition, the engine capacity was increased to 954cc and a bigger radiator installed. A more powerful computer and bigger injectors were added, re mapping and heavily improving the EFI system. Overall, the CBR954 also had a leaner, meaner, more aerodynamic look. Not one panel remained unaltered, from the CBR929 model. The frame and headstock were strengthened, and the rigidity of the swing arm improved, which in turn, improved handling. The riding pegs were also raised, to allow the rider more lean into the corners. The new CBR954 now delivered 77ft. Lbf of torque, even though its dry weight was down to just 168 kilos (which is less than Hondas CBR600). To date, the Honda CBR954 Motorcycle is the penultimate in the revolutionary, and evolutionary, Fireblade series. She’s quick and lightweight, with more than enough power, and stopping power, to put her in a class of her own. Which, as we know, was always Big Reds intention
